What Agafay actually is
Agafay is a stone desert — hamada — not a sand desert. No dunes, no camel caravans crossing an ocean of sand. What you get instead is a pale, cracked plateau at 700 metres, cut by dry riverbeds, with the High Atlas standing behind it and the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir glinting at the bottom of the valley.
That matters for two reasons. It is 30 minutes from Marrakech rather than nine hours to Merzouga, so it fits in an afternoon. And the ground is firm, which is why quads and buggies work here and struggle in the dunes.
The four things to do
Take one, or stack them into an evening. Prices below are the starting point for each.
Quad Agafay
250cc automatics, solo or two-up. No licence, briefing included. The most popular way to see the plateau.
From €35 per quad
Buggy Agafay
800cc two-seaters with roll cage and harness. Faster, side by side, better on rough ground.
From €70 per buggy
Camel ride
Forty minutes at walking pace with a local handler, timed for the last of the light.
€15 per person
Agafay dinner
Salads, tagine or grill and mint tea at a lantern-lit camp once the sun is down.
€25 per person
Three ways people put it together
You can build any combination in the booking form. These are the three we run most.
| Combination | What's in it | Out for | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick ride | Quad Duo, 1 hour, with transfers | 2½ hours | €50 |
| Sunset classic | Quad Duo 1 hour + camel ride for two, timed for golden hour | 4 hours | €80 |
| Full evening | Buggy Duo 1 hour + camel ride + dinner at the camp for two | 5–6 hours | €170 |
When to come
Agafay runs all year. What changes is the time of day you want to be out there.
| Season | On the plateau | Best slot |
|---|---|---|
| March–May | Green edges after the rains, Atlas still under snow. The best month is April. | Any — sunset is exceptional |
| June–August | Hot and bright. We drop the 14:00 departure in July and August. | 09:00 or sunset |
| September–November | Warm days, cool evenings, clear light. Our busiest season. | Sunset — book ahead |
| December–February | Cold mornings, blue skies, snow on the Atlas behind you. Bring a jacket. | 14:00 |

Planning questions
How far is Agafay from Marrakech?
About 30 km south-west, which is 25 to 35 minutes by road from the Medina depending on traffic at Bab Ighli. Transfer is included in every booking.
How long should I set aside?
A one-hour ride with transfers takes about two and a half hours door to door. Add a camel ride and dinner and you are out for five to six hours — leave the riad around 16:00 and you are back by 22:00.
What is the best time of day?
Sunset, by a distance. The plateau turns the colour of clay and the temperature drops. It is also the slot that sells out first, so book it a few days ahead in spring and autumn.
Can I do everything in one visit?
Yes — that's how most people book it. Ride, then camel, then dinner, in that order, on the same evening. The booking form adds each one to the same reservation.
